5 Essential Apps for Cycling Trips in Europe (2025 ver)

Planning a cycling trip in Europe?

Then you've come to the right place.

In this post, I will share the 5 most important apps that can make your journey smoother, easier, and more pleasant when going on a bike trip.

1. Komoot

I cannot love this app more. To be completely fair, their UX/UI design isn't the best in the market, but I still love it because it does its job perfectly. When planning a new route, it's a bit unintuitive, and sometime sthe compass doesn't seem to be moving as you want, but with all these drawbacks, I still use Komoot. To check whether on your way, you can also sign up for the premium, but I just paid for the worldmap once. It was around 25 euros or so and you don't have to pay again.

One thing I really like about Komoot is that you can customize the route depending on what kind of activity you are planning. It can be used for hiking, running, roadbiking, gravel biking and many more.

Also, you can save those routes offline. This is a really important feature, as I sometimes go to a very remote places where I cannot get a phone signal for hours.

There are many alternatives out there, but this is the most beloved ones at least in Germany.

2. Warmshowers

I have to admit that I haven't used this properly yet, but I've seen quite some bikepackers using this for budget trips. It's basically cyclist community offering accommodations and showers. Hence the name. People who sign up to host other cyclists appear on the map and you can contact them to ask for showers or free accommodation. You have to pay a certain registration fee, but it wasn't a lot. Also, you can ask for help when your bike is broken or when you need a specific tool to fix your bike.

3. Maps.me

This is another offline map. I have it as a backup of Komoot. With Maps.me you can download an entire area, not only route. So if you get lost, you can still find other routes as it provides offline navigation. It's a lot simpler than Komoot, but as a backup, I would recommend. And it's free!

4. Strava

Since all the hypes about running and cycling, now apparently everybody knows Strava and someone told me it's a new dating app. Nonetheless, it is a great app to track your performance and achievements. I connect my apple watch to collect different data and it is a lot more detailed than apple watch app. It's quite interesting because apple watch can collect these detailed data but just doesn't show you on the app. So yeah. With Strava you can see a lot more about your activity.

5. Bike Repair

Unexpected bike issues can happen anytime. This app lets you know about step-wise guide to fix problems on the go. I have to again confess that I haven't used it myself, but we all know that safety comes first! Better safe than sorry. If not this app, I would still have some means prepared to tackle unexpected mechanical issues with my bike.

So... in this post we've talked about 5 MUST HAVE APPS for bikepacking. Saving money, tracking your journey is important, but I hope all of you who read this to have a SAFE journey. Happy cycling!
